7 First Dates You Should Go On

I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for dates. Proper get-out-of-the-house-and-do-stuff first dates. I love dating.  In fact, I would date indefinitely if that was possible. That would make for a lot of first dates. I’ve only gone on traditional first dates (if I was lucky enough to get one) and they were amazing, but I have a few ideas that I would love to see in reality. Like I said, dating in college is the best and worst thing.7-amazing-first-date-ideas-blog-little-misadventures

1. Dinner.

love good food. I have three favourite places to eat in Auckland (so far) and they’re all places that I’ve been to on dates. It turns out that some men have good taste…Literally. My favourites are: Euro and Botswana Butchery in Auckland Central and Casablanca in Orewa. Dinner is a traditional first date idea, but it is one I love because you get to sit down and have an awesome meal (and booze) while getting to know someone. Win-win, right?

Bonus round: My favourite alcoholic drink is a Black Russian or anything with vodka. My favourite main is anything with chicken and my favourite dessert is Banoffee Pie. A restaurant that everyone should try is Mexico. I love that place. They have this amazing fried chicken that is guaranteed to blow your mind and knock your socks off.

2. Beach trip.

Everyone loves the beach. If I had a first date (or any date) on the beach then I would be over the moon. I live in New Zealand, so there are unlimited beaches to visit. Imagine a sunny day, a picnic blanket, stashes of vodka (and beer), and a culinary feast AKA pizza. Who wouldn’t want to go?

Bonus round: Don’t get sand in the pizza. Nothing will ruin the first date faster than crunching down on a tiny grain of sand.

3. Zoo.

love the zoo. I swear I’m a small child at heart. I haven’t been to the zoo in years, but I have always loved it. Part of me really hates the fact that the animals are in cages, but part of me loves being able to see them ‘up close’. I got to hold a lion cub when I was in primary school and it was hands down the best part of my education 🙂 So, go on, grab a coffee (and the person you fancy) and take them on a date to the zoo!

Bonus round: My favourite animals are the big cats. I could stare into their enclosure the whole time and I would be a happy camper. I hate, hate, hate monkeys and any type of bird. I will look at them, but it will be at a very fast-paced walk or jog. My level of hate and fear is real.

4. Ice-skating.

I am probably the most uncoordinated person ever, so I can’t believe I’m suggesting this for as a first date idea. I am the person who needs a frame or has to hang on to the side of the rink for 90% of the day before attempting to go across the ice alone. This gives you the perfect chance to work together and have a laugh. An amazing first date is different for everyone, but take a step out of your comfort zone. Do something that you don’t do all the time. Why not?

Bonus round: I will probably fall down. A lot. Be prepared to catch me or let me fall on you.

5. Wine tasting.

I love wine as much as I love food, which is a lot. I have always wanted to go on a winery tour and to test out every type of wine. I don’t know the difference between most wines, #noob but I know what I like and what I don’t like. Isn’t that the only thing that counts? Plus, who wouldn’t like to get a little tipsy on their first date? Wine tasting is probably the best ice breaker there ever was.

Bonus round: My favourite types of wine are chardonnay and pinot gris. I am a huge fan of Villa Maria (almost anything) and I’m beginning to dip my toes in the red wine pool. I don’t hate it.

6. Café hop.

Coffee is forever. I am mildly addicted to coffee. There is nothing quite like a triple shot flat white or a spicy chai latte with soy milk. I would love to walk down a street and go into a string of cafés for coffee, food or to simply look around. Cafés are (one of) my happy place(s). Plus, who doesn’t like the traditional coffee date as a first date?

Bonus round: My favourite drink is a chai latte (surprise, surprise). My favourite café food is ginger slice and neenish tarts.

7. Star gazing.

I think this is part of every romantic movie that has ever been created. Boy takes girl to a romantic spot with blankets, wine and music is playing. They lie on the grass and stare at the sky for a long time. Sounds cheesy, right? Well, surprise! There is a cheesy, mushy girl hidden away somewhere. I remember star-gazing when I went to my year nine camp. I had no idea what I was looking at, but I loved it.

Bonus round: Bringing extra blankets and pillows gets you bonus points. Who doesn’t want bonus points on a first date?

First dates don’t have to be scary. They can be amazing and creative. Heck, they can even be fun. First dates are the best thing ever. One day, you’re going to go on a first date with a person that you’re going to be dating for the rest of your life. How crazy is that?

  1. I love dates! I am engaged but my fiancée and I love going out. We try not to make them feel like just usual couple date nights so we plan them out and we actually get nervous. It’s quite funny. We jump at any opportunity to dress up and go out on the town. A beach trip, zoo trip, and stargazing all sound great. 🙂

  2. Star gazing really does seem like such a romantic thing. Whenever my husband and I get home late from wherever we were I look up at the sky as we walk to the door and I’m like “look!! it’s so beautiful!” and I tell him that we need to take a blanket and just lay down on the grass and watch the star… still hasn’t happened yet (haha) but hopefully one night soon 😉
